Should Switzerland extend its moratorium on GMOs?

Dialog 2.0 Event: Carbon Copy x Paulus Akademie - An Evening of Science and Socializing: Delving into the GMO Debate in Switzerland

In cooperation with the Paulus Akademie, on a recent evening, we orchestrated a uniquely enlightening event that combined the relaxed atmosphere of an after-work gathering with the intellectual stimulation of a scientific debate. The focus was a hot topic: the potential extension of Switzerland's moratorium on GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in agriculture.

The event started with two short introductions from our experts Dr. Monika Messmer (Co-Head of the Department of Crop Sciences at Forschungs institute für biologischen Landbau FiBL) and Professor Beat Keller (Head of the Department of Molecular Plant Biology at the University of Zurich), setting the stage for a well-informed exploration of this complex issue.

How can we have a structured debate on an emotionally charged topic like GMOs? Dialoag 2.0 is specifically designed to answer this question. In small groups of 5 people, the participants discuss pro and contra arguments presented on different cards.

At the end of each discussion phase, which lasts about 10 minutes, we ask the participants to rate the argument's persuasiveness. This helps separate the argument from the emotions it usually embeds in.

This format encourages real, practical interaction. You speak with strangers, engage in good-faith dialogue, and challenge your preconceptions. It's a chance to practice the art of listening and learn from those with different perspectives. We finished the event with a friendly apéro to foster and strengthen a sense of community and civic bonds.

Positive Feedback Fuels Our Mission

The feedback from our post-event survey was overwhelmingly positive, which is heartening and motivating. It reaffirms our commitment to organizing more events like this, where the community can learn, discuss, and connect meaningfully. Participants appreciated the thoughtful organization and the opportunity to delve into a significant topic while enjoying a relaxed and friendly environment.

Commitment to Accessibility and Integrity

We are proud to say that all our events are free of charge and operate on a donation basis. No corporate sponsorship influences the content or structure of our gatherings. We aim to create an environment that benefits individuals and society, free from corrupting influences. This approach ensures that our events remain accessible, supporting an open and unbiased exploration of important topics.

Reflecting on the Outcome

The split decision in the final vote on extending the GMO moratorium—50% for, 50% against—highlights the issue's complexity and the participants' balanced understanding. It illustrates that, while there are no simple answers, there is great value in discussing and debating these transformative topics.

As we look forward to hosting more events, we remain committed to offering experiences that are not only educational but also enjoyable and enriching. Whether you're a seasoned expert or simply curious about the world, our gatherings provide a space to engage, learn, and grow in a community of thoughtful and engaged citizens.
